(Ed's. note: Babes in Arms in its original incarnation as a Broadway show with a score by Rodgers and Hart included an impressive list of songs many of which became standards--songs such as "Where or When," The Lady Is a Tramp," My Funny Valentine, I Wish I Were in Love Again," and Johnny One-Note. Of the songs Rodgers and Hart wrote for the show, only its title song ("Babes in Arms") "Where or When," and some background music based on the melody of "The Lady Is a Tramp" were retained for the movie. Instead a wide range of songs written by other songwriters were interpolated into the movie's score. These included several with lyrics by its producer (and successful lyricist) Arthur Freed. Along with I Cried for You," the movie featured "Good Mornin" (which was written by Freed and his regular writing partner Herb Nacio Brown), "The Broadway Melody," "You Are My Lucky Star," "Broadway Rhythm," and even a snippet from "Singin' in the Rain" originally written by Freed and Brown in 1927 well before the Freed produced the 1952 movie of the same title.
Although "I Cried for You" was written for independent publication, Arthur Freed, its lyricist, interpolated it into the movie version of Babes in Arms, which he produced for MGM in 1939, where it is sung by Judy Garland. Judy plays Patsy Barton who has just been replaced by the established child actress "Baby Rosalie" in a show produced by her boy friend Mickey (Mickey Rooney). Rosalie has got money and needs a part. Mickey has a part in his show but needs money--so Judy/Patsy is the loser. Broken-hearted, she boards a train and sings " I Cried for You."
Judy Garland sings "I Cried for You" in the 1939 movie Babes in Arms.
