About the Show Big Boy / Origins of the Song

Thomas S. Hischak,
The Tin Pan Alley Song Encyclopedia, Greenwood Press, 2002.
(See pp. 183-84)

Other songs written for Big Boy currently included in the Cafe Songbook Catalog of The Great American Songbook: none.

For a listing of songs used in the original production of this show except for "It All Depends on You," which was interpolated into the show after the score was written), see IBDB song list.

Although all sheet music known to us is dated 1926, it is likely the song was written in 1925. "It All Depends on You" constituted the song writing debut of the team of De Sylva, Brown and Henderson and was written separately from the score for Big Boy at Al Jolson's request "because he wanted to interpolate a new number [into the show] to fill out his role." Jolson, who sang the song in the show, had a hit recording of it as did Ruth Etting who used it so often it became a signature song for her. Doris Day sings it in Love Me or Leave Me, the fictionaliszed biopic of Etting.
