"A Ship without a Sail was written for the the show Me Without You, which opened and closed in Detroit in September, 1929. In that foreshortened run, it was sung by Madeline Gibson and Jack Whiting. After the closing, Me Without You was given a new book, some new songs and quite a few new performers and transformed into Heads Up!, which tried out in Philadelphia in Oct./Nov. 1929 and opened in New York at the Alvin Theater for a run of 144 performances from Nov. 11, 1929, through March 15, 1930. In it "A Ship without a Sail" was performed by Betty Starbuck and Whiting. (The Complete Lyrics Of Lorenz Hart.
