The Fishers are a family songwriters. Marvin is the son of Fred Fisher and the brother of Doris Fisher, who wrote "You Always Hurt the One You Love" and "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall, as well as being a successful singer" and Dan Fisher who composed "Good Morning, Heartache."
Marvin began his formal musical education at the Institute of Musical Art in New York, now the Julliard School, studying piano and theory. Along with the composing of pop songs such as "Cloudy Morning," "For Once in Your Life," and "When Sunny Gets Blue," he had an active career as pianist for the Justin Stone Orchestra and arranger for the orchestras of Glenn Miller, Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, Les Brown and Johnny Green in the 1930's and 40's.
In the late 40's his musical training and experience, not to mention family ties, led to him becoming the West Coast representative for Fred Fisher Music Company, an organization begun by his father in 1907. By 1942, when his father died, he and his brother Dan took over the firm. Marvin branched out by creating a subsidiary of the original company called Marvin Music that published his own songs as well as those of Nat King Cole, Rosemary Clooney and Peggy Lee.
David Jenness and Don Velsey in their book Classic American Popular Song: The Second Half-Century, 1950-2000 make the point that they found no examples of a Fisher song with a
verse. "His songs come from a jazz sensibility, not a theatrical one. They swing right into action, with no need to set the stage narratively" (p. 252, hardcover Ed.).
